I’m always looking for something to help me fall asleep when I’m home alone, as the dog is happily snoring and I’m convinced we have ghosts haunting the walls because WHAT IS THAT SOUND IF BOTH PETS ARE PASSED OUT IN BED WITH ME?!
Dun, dun, dun…
Enter the movie “The Secret,” which is based on a book I always talked smack about thanks to my short stint working in a bookstore and all the people who claimed the book would turn them into multi-millionaires and send them first class to an early retirement in Monaco. Whew. It just doesn’t happen that way, you know? At least not without some really lucky lotto numbers.

Well, I caved and watched it as I tried to drown out the scary noises that I know aren’t just pipes in the basement. And you know what? I’m kind of convinced that it sort of rocked my world.
Maybe.
Obviously I fell asleep when I was watching it, but the next day I woke up on the right side of the bed. I forced myself to have a freakishly positive attitude. My hair was looking fierce and my jeans didn’t feel as tight as usual. When I sat down to write for work, I was able to land every single important interview before noon.
The whole thing about “The Secret” is that the Law of Attraction is the real deal, and you need positive affirmations to attain everything you want out of life. Like attracts like, so positive thinking attracts positive results.
Er, at least I think that’s the idea, considering I fell asleep near the beginning.
Anyway, positive affirmations are awesome for your well being even if you don’t jive with New Age mumbo-jumbo. For instance, say you want to lose weight before your big day. It’s so hard, right? I’ve been chugging sickly SlimFast for breakfast and lunch, and I’m having one hell of a time not taking a detour through McDonald’s every time I pass by.
But you know what helps? Positive energy. And I’m big on the energy and not so big on the working out part, you dig?
If you hate working out as much as I do, you can repeat these health-centric positive affirmations over and over again (to yourself, you crazyperson) and eventually, YOU WILL BELIEVE IT. Well, that’s kind of the goal, anyway:
- My fitness routine is enjoyable, energetic and easy
- My daily fitness routine gives me excellent results
- I love working out because it makes me feel healthier by the minute
- I enjoy exercising and my fitness routine gives me fantastic results
- My metabolism speeds up during my fitness routine
- There's nothing as energizing as a vigorous workout
- I love working out and pushing my limits
Well, wouldn’t it be great if that really made you want to work out, and as a result, you got all healthy and could run up flights of stairs without getting winded? And then you could actually drive by a McDonald’s without getting all glazed-eyed-and-drooly over fries?
- I will be slimmer and stronger if I choose SlimFast over the fries
And so on until you eventually just want that SlimFast.
- My SlimFast tastes like a delicious healthy treat, and I love it
So what’s the point of this entire post? Well, you New Age converts, I’m thinking this could be pretty much the most important thing you can do for yourself leading up to your big day. Here I am, less than two months away from wearing a white frock and saying vows, and I have a ton of crap to do.
- Today I will accomplish tasks on my list.
- Today I will make the bridesmaids' bouquets and they will be beautiful
- I can plan this wedding and not go insane in the process
Whether you have an unlimited budget or are throwing the whole party to the tune of $2k, you could probably use benefit from some positive affirmations on your wedding day. Not only will it chill you out, but maybe "The Secret" is right and everything will come true? Like attracts like, remember. (FYI: I will be saying some about the weather leading up to our outdoor ceremony.)
- I can handle anything that comes my way
- If I make a mistake, I am able to learn from it and forgive myself
- I will have a joyful wedding
- I am blessed with health, love and friends
- I love and accept myself the way I am
- I believe in myself and my decisions
- I can handle challenges and I can triumph over them
- I choose to stay calm under pressure
- I choose to let the stress leave my body
- Today, I choose to live in peaceful harmony with the universe
- Today I will be thankful for what I have and count my blessings
- Today I will compromise when faced with disharmony
And there you have it. Thanks be to a house that scares me and makes me watch a movie before going to sleep, because it teaches me about the power of positivity and the Law of Attraction. Do I really believe it? Ask me in a few weeks. But when did positive thoughts ever hurt anyone, hmm?
What do you guys think? Are you down with the New Age thinking, or do you think "The Secret" was just a scheme that sold millions of books and movies worldwide? I'd love to hear if the Law of Attraction helped you...or if you think it's bull honkey.
